NEW YORK - After playing its first two games on the road, Columbia's field hockey team will return home to the friendly confines of the Columbia Field Hockey Venue this weekend.
On Saturday, September 8, the Lions will host Bucknell in a 1 p.m. game. A day later, La Salle will come to New York to tangle with Columbia at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
Columbia suffered a pair of tight one-goal losses in its games against Richmond and VCU last weekend. Against Richmond in their season opener, the Lions stormed out to a 3-0 lead after the first half only to see the Spiders tie the game with zeroes on the clock in regulation.
Despite the loss, Christie O'Hara made an eye-popping 17 saves in goal against Richmond. Gabby Kozlowski, Molly Andrews and Katie DeSandis all found the back of the cage in the game against Richmond, which has an early-season win against #25 American to its credit.
In the game against VCU, Columbia's defense was stout again, helping Liz Malone scored the tying goal with 12 minutes left in regulation. The Rams converted the game winner with four minutes left and have won their first three games to start the season.
Columbia has won its last two home openers under head coach Marybeth Freeman, each by 3-1 scores (Vermont in 2010 and Brown in 2011). Bucknell enters Saturday's game with a 3-1 record after a 2-1 victory over Cornell on Wednesday. La Salle sports a 2-3 mark after a 3-2 loss at Villanova on Wednesday.
Live stats will be available for both games this weekend. Saturday's game vs. Bucknell is a 1 p.m. start, as is Sunday's game vs. La Salle. Admission is free to all home Columbia field hockey games at Baker Athletics Complex.
