NEW YORK - The Columbia men's tennis team will hit the
courts for the first time this year, competing at the Farnsworth/Princeton
Invitational Friday, Sept. 14 through Sunday, Sept. 16. Princeton will host the
event at the Lenz Tennis Center. In the event of inclement weather, matches
will be moved to Jadwin Gymnasium.
Columbia will be one of 14 teams sending competitors to Princeton,
N.J. this weekend. The other universities that will have student-athletes
competing are: Binghamton, Boston College, Bucknell, Buffalo, Cornell,
Fairleigh Dickinson, Georgetown, Penn, Penn State, Princeton, St. John's, Wake
Forest and Yale.
For singles play, there will be six draws, each comprised of
16 players. Doubles will feature three draws of 16 pairs.
The Lions finished the 2011-12 season with an overall record
of 18-5 and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
Winston Lin, the ITA Northeast Region Player to Watch,
returns for his second season with the Lions. As a freshman, Lin played to a
singles record of 21-1 playing at the No. 1 and 2 spots. His 7-0 record in the
Ivy league led to his unanimous selection as Ivy League Rookie of the Year.
Nathaniel Gery, Ashok Narayana, Max Schnur and Bert Vancura
also return for Columbia this season. The foursome collectively played to a
45-17 record in singles play last season. Four freshmen will join Columbia this
year: Dragos Ignat, Eric Rubin, Daniel Morgan and Chris Sabaitis.
