PRINCETON, N.J. - The Columbia men's tennis team had a strong start to the 2012-13 season Friday at the Farnsworth/Princeton Invitational. Of the 18 matches in which Columbia competed, the Lions came out on top in 14.

Eric Rubin opened the tournament with a pair of wins in the Jadwin Draw. Rubin won both matches in straight sets, defeating opponents form Bucknell and Yale. Bert Vancura also notched two wins Friday, using three sets to top Aswin Nambi from Binghamton, before dropping Princeton's Jonathan Carcione, 6-3, 6-4.

Columbia got two more wins from both Winston Lin and Ashok Narayana. Lin, competing in the Tiger Draw, needed three sets in both of his opening day matches, but was victorious in both. Narayana, playing in the Cordish Draw, used only two sets to win his each of first two matches.

Competing in the Pagoda Draw, Columbia's Daniel Morgan downed Christian McKean from Boston College, 6-3, 6-3, and Princeton's Michael Lin, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

Max Schnur made it five Lions to win two singles matches Friday, downing opponents from Cornell and Buffalo.

Two doubles teams also earned wins for Columbia. Narayana and Schnur advanced in the Doubles A bracket with an 8-3 defeat of Wake Forest's Jonathan Ho and Danny Kreyman. Rubin and Vancura edged out St. John's Mike Lampa and Mark Mozer, 8-6.

Play continues at the Lenz Tennis Center in Princeton, N.J. Saturday.
