NEW YORK - The Columbia volleyball team will look to win its
fourth straight match as the Lions open Ivy League action vs. Cornell at Levien
Gymnasium on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Columbia (5-4), a perfect 3-0 on its home court, opened the
2012 home season by hosting and winning the Columbia Invitational last weekend
with victories over Colgate, Rhode Island and Hofstra.
Leading the way for the Lions this season is Megan Gaughn
who has recorded 60 kills (2.14 kills/set), Molly Winger with 121 digs (4.03
digs/set) and Savannah Fletcher, who currently ranks 19th in the
nation with 1.43 blocks per set.
The Lions boast the reigning Ivy League Player and Co-Rookie
of the Week in first-year Atlanta Moye-McLaren, who was named Most Valuable
Player in the Columbia Invitational after recording first career double-doubles
that included identical 10-kill, 13-dig performances in wins over Hofstra and
Rhode Island. She also narrowly missed a double-double in Columbia's victory
over Colgate, as she recorded nine kills and a career-high 16 digs. The outside
hitter currently leads the Lions with nine service aces on the season and ranks
second with 59 kills.
Cornell (2-7) participated in the Temple Tournament last
weekend and walked away with a 3-1 victory over Central Connecticut State
before dropping a 3-0 decision to Temple. The Big Red are currently 0-3 on the
road.
Breanna Wong leads Cornell with 90 kills (2.65 per set),
while Kelly Reinke leads with 82 digs and 15 service aces.
Saturday's match marks the 55th meeting between Ivy
League partners and New York rivals Columbia and Cornell. Although the Big Red
holds a 46-8 advantage over the Lions in the all-time series, Columbia won both
contests a season ago and will look to continue its winning streak this
weekend.
