WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Columbia women's soccer team and Army
posted five goals Sunday, as the Black Knights went on to secure a 3-2 win
Sunday over the Lions.
Army took a 1-0 lead to the halftime intermission, as
Candace Stewart scored the lone goal of the opening half in the 38th minute. Stewart
worked her way around Columbia's keeper Grace Redmon and scored the first goal
of the game to give Army a 1-0 lead.
Elly McGuffog provided the equalizer for Columbia in the
57th minute. Monica Jean and Beverly Leon provided the assists, as McGuffog
scored from the right side of the penalty box.
The tie would remain in effect until the 75th minute when Joey
Molacek recorded the go-ahead goal for Army. Three minutes later, Kim An made
it a 3-1 lead for the Black Knights, burying a penalty kick.
The Lions came within a goal, with Leon scoring on a header
in the 83rd minute. Coleen Rizzo registered an assist on the play, but it would
be the final goal for Columbia, as Army would hold on for a 3-2 win.
Each team finished with 16 shots on the day, with Army
recording nine corner kicks to Columbia's four. The Lions will next be in
action Sept. 29 at Brown.
