NEW YORK - Columbia volleyball looks to continue its winning
streak as the Lions host a pair of Ivy League contests vs. Brown and Yale this
weekend at Levien Gymnasium. The Lions will first face Brown at 7 p.m. on Friday,
followed by a 5 p.m. match vs. Yale on Saturday.
Coming off a 3-0 Ivy League opening victory over Cornell
last week, Columbia (6-4, 1-0 Ivy League) has won four straight matches to
remain undefeated on the Lions' home court.
Leading the way for the Lions is junior Heather Braunagel,
who currently ranks 12th in the nation and first in the league in hitting
percentage at .433, while junior middle blocker Savannah Fletcher sits 16th in
the nation in blocks per set at 1.46 and second in the league with a .421
hitting percentage.
Defending Ivy League champions Yale (5-5, 1-0 Ivy League)
defeated Brown (3-7, 0-1 Ivy League) last weekend by a 3-1 score in the
conference opener. The Bulldogs won the first two sets, but Brown pushed the
second to a 26-all tie before Yale pulled away. The Bears then won the third before
falling in the final fourth set that once again went past the 25-all mark.
Yale, which also defeated Albany 3-0 last week, is led by
the reigning two-time Ivy League Player of the Week, junior setter Kendall
Polan. Polan posted back-to-back triple-doubles vs. Albany and Brown. Against
Albany, Polan tallied 28 assists, while hitting .667 with 10 kills and 13 digs.
In the Ivy opener at Brown, Polan recorded 20 digs, 10 kills and 31 assists.
Brown is led by Maddie Lord (3.38 kills/set), Alexandra
Rieckhoff (8.01 assists/set) and Annika Gliottone (5.05 digs/set).
Last season, Columbia dropped two matches to Yale, including
a 3-2 heartbreaker despite an early rally by Lions to come back from a 2-0
deficit.
Columbia topped Brown in both contests last season by scores
of 3-1 and 3-0.
Live video broadcast will be available for Friday's 7 p.m.
match, while live stats will be available for both contests. Admission is free at
Levien Gymnasium for volleyball matches.
