BOX SCORE
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Coleen Rizzo and Beverly Leon each scored
in the first half Saturday afternoon, as the Columbia women's soccer team
improved to 2-0 in the Ivy League with a 2-0 defeat of Brown.
Each goalkeeper faced a good bit of action in the first 20
minutes of the contest, as both Columbia's Grace Redmon stopped a pair of
Louisa Pitney shots, while Amber Bledsoe turned away two Rizzo attempts.
Rizzo's persistence on the offensive end of the field would
pay off though in the 29th minute. Leon set Isabel King up for a nice cross to
the middle of the box that Rizzo was able to head into the top right corner for
the go-ahead tally. Rizzo now has three goals on the year.
Just four minutes later, it would be Leon putting the ball
in the back of the net for a 2-0 lead in Columbia's favor. Maya Marder served
up a free kick from 45 yards out that Leon headed over the Bledsoe. The goal
gives Leon a team-high 11 points this season.
At the halftime break, Brown held a 7-5 edge in shot
attempts. Redmon had the slight advantage in saves, 3-2, over Bledsoe.
In the second half, the Brown offense picked up the tempo, reeling
off 15 shots, including five shots on net that were all stopped by Redmon.
Conversely, the Columbia offense went stagnant, not recording a single shot in
the final 45 minutes.
The defense though did its job and kept the Bears off the
scoreboard. Columbia, led by its stellar defense and goalkeeping, has shutout
its opponent in each of its five victories.
Columbia will return home for a Monday night affair against
Lehigh. Kick-off at the Columbia Soccer Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
