PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Antonio Matarazzo scored his first collegiate goal in the 82nd minute, but the Columbia men's soccer team fell to No. 21 Brown Saturday, 2-1.

Saturday's contest got off to a slow start offensively, with the lone shot of the first 14 minutes going to Columbia's Kofi Agyapong, a blast that went wide. Kyle Jackson's first test in goal for Columbia came in the 16th minute when he turned away an attempt from Tim Whalen.

Columbia put the pressure on the Brown defense midway through the half, as Henning Sauerbier had a pair of shots blocked, while Jack Gagne had his attempt saved by Sam Kernan-Schloss in the 25th minute.

The teams would head to the halftime intermission with the game scoreless. Columbia tallied six shots through the first 45 minutes, while Brown recorded four. The Bears took the lone corner kick of the opening half, and were whistled for the only offsides call.

Brown's offense came out with renewed energy in the second half, attempting four shots in the first eight minutes, but Columbia blocked each of them. Columbia's only attempt during that span came off the foot of Sauerbier, missing the net wide.

The Bears finally broke the 0-0 tie in the 70th minute, as Thomas McNamara scored on a penalty kick. Six minutes later the Bears would add to the lead. Daniel Taylor drove home a pass from Dylan Remick to put the Bears ahead 2-0.

Matarazzo would get Columbia within one, scoring in the 82nd minute. The freshman from Fair Lawn, N.J. scored his first collegiate goal on a long shot from the right side of the goal to give the Lions a shot to force overtime.

Brown would hold off Columbia's late threat though and escape with the 2-1 win.

The Lions have the next week off from competition, with their next match coming on the road at Penn, Saturday, Oct. 6.
