PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - Columbia women's tennis player
Nicole Bartnik, currently the 95th ranked player in the nation, captured a
straight-set victory over No. 15 Natalie Beazant from Rice in the opening round
of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships Thursday.
Bartnik, the only Ivy League player selected to the main
draw, was able to take an early lead on Beazant, the 2012 Conference USA Player
of the Year, winning the first set 6-3. The senior from Bradenton, Fla.
continued to keep the pressure on and finished off the match in just two sets,
winning by a score of 6-2 in set two.
Next up for Bartnik is the fourth-seeded Zoe Scandalis from
USC. Scandalis is a in her second season with the Trojans after a stellar
freshman campaign in which she was named to the All-Pac-12 First-Team, an ITA
All-American and was selected to the USTA Collegiate Team. She defeated Baylor's
Ema Burgic, 6-1, 6-1, in the first round.
Friday's match is currently slated for first serve to go up
at 1:45 p.m. EST.
