BOX SCORE
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Columbia volleyball bounced back from a
tough loss to Yale with a 3-0 sweep over Brown Saturday night by scores of
25-13, 25-20, 25-17.
The win was Columbia's fourth straight over Brown (6-14, 2-8
Ivy League) and second of the season as the Lions improved their record to 10-9
overall and 5-5 in Ivy League action.
Reigning Ivy League Co-Player of the week Megan Gaughn once
again led the way for the Lions with a match-high 13 kills and team high-tying
nine digs. First-year Atlanta Moye-McLaren also recorded nine digs on the night
while Colleen Brennan had 31 assists and seven digs.
Columbia shot out to a 4-0 lead in the first set and did not
look back in posting its first victory of the night with ease.
The Bears scored first in the second set, but the Lions
responded with seven unanswered points to regain their dominance. With Columbia
holding a commanding 13-5 lead, Brown rallied with a 5-0 run that included
three kills by Thea Derrough. A Gaughn kill halted the Bears from coming any
closer than within three points as Columbia scored three straight to make it
16-10.
With the Lions ahead 21-14, Brown attempted to hold on with
a 4-0 run to once again make it a three-point match, but Columbia answered with
two straight kills by senior Heather Braunagel and another by Gaughn to extend
its lead to 24-19. Needing only one more point, Brown came back with a kill by
Alexandra Rieckhoff before Caitlin Brenton finished things off with a kill for
the Lions.
The third set victory would not come quite as easy for the
Lions, as a back-and-forth battle played out that included 11 ties. With the
score knotted at 16-16, Columbia took off on a 9-1 surge that began with seven unanswered
points to secure the win.
Up next, the Lions will continue their road stretch at
Harvard on November 2 at 7 p.m. followed by a 5 p.m. match vs. Dartmouth on
November 3.
