NEW YORK - The postseason accolades continue to roll
in for members of the Columbia field hockey team after seeing two players named
to the NFHCA All-Mideast Region on Thursday. Senior Gabby Kozlowski earned a
first team selection, while classmate Katie DeSandis secured a place on the
second team, respectively.
"We are so proud of both Gabby and Katie for their
superior skills and tactical knowledge this season, which led them to receive
these All-Region awards," head coach Marybeth Freeman said. "It is not only a
testament to their performances all season, but their continued desire to be
students of the game during their time at Columbia. Congratulations to both
women for a season well done."
Kozlowski had previously been named to the Mideast Region
Second Team in 2010 and 2011, but broke through to earn a first team nod after
posting team-highs of 12 goals and 26 points. The Voorhees, N.J. native completed
her brilliant career with 42 career tallies, breaking Columbia's all-time
record previously held by Nikki Campbell ('02CC) for more than a decade. Kozlowski
ranked among the top-five in nearly every offensive category in the conference
en route to being selected as a first team All-Ivy Leaguer for the third
consecutive year. The league also tabbed her as Player of the Week on Sep. 11
after posting seven points (3 G, 1 A) after a pair of wins against Bucknell and
LaSalle.
This marks the first time DeSandis has been selected for
All-Region honors after landing on the All-Ivy League first team two weeks ago.
The standout back was the team's primary penalty corner taker, and tied for the
team lead with 10 assists, coming one shy of tying the Lions' single-season
mark. She also added a career-best seven goals to finish with 24 points on the
season. A strong two-way player, the Emmaus, Pa. product led the squad with
four defensive saves on the year.
The Lions wrapped up another successful campaign in 2012,
finishing the year 9-8 overall and 4-3 in the Ivy League, to finish in third
place for the second straight season.
