COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado - Columbia fencer Margaret Lu proved herself once again as she won her second straight Junior Foil World Cup title in Bratislava, Slovakia on Saturday.

Lu, competing in a field of 134, finished off the pools as one of just six athletes to go undefeated, earning a bye into the table of 64 as the third seed of the tournament.

"It is an incredible feeling to have won my second career Junior World Cup title, and to do it in Bratislava, a competition that has historically the most difficult and well-attended event, is even more rewarding," said Lu. "The field was very strong but I felt prepared because of all the resources I have at Columbia: the academic rigor which has challenged my thinking, having people to practice with, the Columbia strength and conditioning program I participate in, and most notably, working with the incredible coaching staff."

The Greenwich, Conn. native opened the direct elimination tables with a 15-7 win over Karen Weis of Germany and a 15-5 victory against Melinda Hajdu of Hungary.

In the table of 16, Lu faced a challenge in Francesca Palumbo, an Italian who won the silver medal at the first Junior World Cup of the season. This time, Lu cut Palumbo's bid for a second medal short as she won the match, 15-11.

Lu fought her way to a trip to the medal rounds with a 15-4 victory over Bartl Thekla of Germany in the quarterfinals.

In the semifinal round, Lu held Russian fencer Alime Rashidova to just eight touches as she won the bout, 15-8.

Lu continued on to clinch the gold medal after her sixth straight DE victory where she overcame Adelina Zagidullina of Russia by a score of 15-10.
