PRINCETON, N.J. - The Columbia football team had a quartet
of student-athletes selected to 2012 All-Ivy League teams, as announced by the
conference office Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2012. Senior defensive lineman Josh Martin
and junior running back Marcorus Garrett garnered First-Team All-Ivy League
honors, while junior linebacker Zach Olinger was selected to the second-team
and senior linebacker Mike Waller was recognized with honorable mention
accolades.
Martin makes his first appearance on the All-Ivy League
First-Team after being selected to the second-team in each of the previous two
seasons. The Aurora, Colo. Native was Columbia's eminent force behind the line
of scrimmage, leading the Lions in sacks (6.5) and tackles for a loss (11.5).
On Senior Day at Lawrence A. Wien Stadium Nov. 10, Martin tallied three sacks
and forced a pivotal fumble to help lead the Lions to a 34-17 win over Cornell.
His performance in that game led to Ivy League co-Defensive Players of the Week
honors. Martin finished the season fourth on the team with 50 tackles, giving
him 140 for his career, 85 of which went into the score sheet as solo efforts.
Garrett's first-team selection is his first All-Ivy League
accolade during his career at Columbia. The Marietta, Ga. native rushed his way
to one of the best seasons any running back has ever had in a Lions' uniform.
Garrett finished the 2012 campaign with 957 ground yards, the third-highest
total in Columbia single-season history and most rushing yards in one season
since 2001 when Jonathan Reese rushed for 967. Garrett also became the first
Columbia back since that 2001 season to eclipse 100 yards in four games in a
single season. With a 95.7 yards per game average, Garrett ranked third in
rushing in the Ivy League while also finding pay dirt six times in 2012. In
conjunction with his ground attack, Garrett caught 22 passes for 158 yards,
bringing his all-purpose total to 1,115 yards.
The most active member of the Columbia defense, Zach
Olinger's exceptional intensity led to a team-high 89 tackles (42 solo). With
the ability to cover most of the field, Olinger finished third on the team with
5.5 TFLs, while equaling Waller with a team-best three interceptions. Filling
up the stat sheet on a regular basis, Olinger forced one fumble, recovered
another, defended four passes and broke up another. The Hoover, Ala. native
began the 2012 season with a highlight performance, notching 10 tackles (six
solo), a forced fumble and an interception as Columbia knocked off Marist.
Twice in the contest against the Red Foxes, Olinger kept the Lions ahead with
his forced fumble coming on a Columbia goal-line stop and the interception
stalling Marist's final drive of the game.
Waller also makes his first appearance on an All-Ivy League
squad after racking up 77 tackles, including a team-high 43 solo takedowns.
Similar to Olinger, Waller possessed the outstanding athletic ability to not
only track ball carriers but to disrupt an opposing team's offense all over the
field. In addition to his 3.5 TFLs and one sack, Waller tied Olinger for a
team-best three picks, equaled Marquel Carter with a team-best five pass
break-ups, defended eight passes and forced two fumbles. Waller recorded both
forced fumbles Oct. 27 in the Lions' 26-22 defeat of Yale at home, earning him the
Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week award. His second came late in the
fourth quarter and was recovered by Columbia, which in turn marched down the
field for the game-winning drive. Waller also became the fourth John Toner
Homecoming Player of the Game, registering 12 solo tackles and nabbing an
interception against Dartmouth Oct. 20.
