LIONS HIT THE ROAD ON THANKSGIVING TO FACE MORGAN STATE Columbia women's basketball will look to roll at Morgan State on Friday as the Lions travel to Baltimore for a 2 p.m. showdown at Hill Field House.
LAST TIME OUT Columbia got its first win of the season behind a 20-point shooting performance by first-year Bailey Ott Sunday afternoon, defeating Fairleigh Dickinson 54-47 in Levien Gym. The Lions (1-3) held the Knights (0-4) winless on the season and snapped a three-game losing streak to FDU dating back to 2005-06. A pair of Columbia firstyears stepped it up in a big way to help lift the Lions to victory. Ott converted 10-of- 15 (66.7 percent) from the field to go with a team-high eight rebounds, while Sara Mead recorded 10 points, seven boards, two assists and a steal. Defensively, senior Tyler Simpson had a career high-tying five steals and seven rebounds, and Lizzy Stachon contributed three blocks and six rebounds.
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. MORGAN STATE The Lions have split their only two meetings with the Lady Bears, 1-1. The first time the two teams faced off was 2005, in head coach Paul Nixon's second game on the Columbia sideline. The Lions won, 85-79 in double overtime in the consolation game of the UMBC Tournament. It was the first victory for Nixon in his Columbia head coaching career. Last season, Columbia led for 19 of the first half's 20 minutes, and junior Tyler Simpson notched a career-high 20 points, but the Lions couldn't hold off Morgan State, falling 70-66.
SCOUTING THE BEARS The Bears are currently 2-2, most recently defeating Stony Brook in a 66-63 overtime victory at the Hill Field House. Morgan State started off the season with a 72-61 victory over Maryland Baltimore County, before dropping the next two to Towson, 61-57, and George Mason, 65-54. The Bears are led by Bianca Jarrett, who is averaging a team-best 20 points, while Moneshia David leads with 5.0 rebounds per game.
SENIOR LEADERSHIP Once again, Columbia brings back two seniors who will be crucial to Columbia's success in the 2012-13 season. Senior co-captains Brittany Simmons and Tyler Simpson will lead the Lions into the year. Simpson earned Honorable Mention All-Ivy recognition following a breakout junior season last year and led Columbia in scoring, averaging 12.6 points per game, including a career-high 26 points against Brown. Simmons bounced back from an injury in 2010-11 to see action in 18 games, during which she posted a season-high nine points against Vermont in the season opener and again vs. Morgan State.
(N)OTT JUST A ROOKIE Columbia first-year Bailey Ott was selected as the Ivy League Rookie of the Week, as announced by the conference on Monday. Ott stepped it up in a big way to help lift Columbia to its first win of the season against Fairleigh Dickinson. The 5-11 forward/center scored a game-high 20 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the field while grabbing eight rebounds in the 54-47 victory. Earlier last week, Ott finished one point and one rebound shy of her first career double-double as she recorded nine points and nine boards in the loss to Wagner.
