NEW YORK - The No. 14 Columbia women's squash team opened
the 2012-13 campaign Sunday playing host to No. 6 Cornell at the SL Green
StreetSquash Center. The Big Red was able to come away with the Ivy League
victory by a score of 9-0.
Cornell was able to take seven of the nine matches Sunday in
three games. Playing in the No. 1 position, Columbia's Catherine Jenkins was
able to capture the second game to even the match at 1-1, but Danielle Letourneau
was able to rebound for the Big Red and take the next two games for the 3-1
win.
Katie Quan took the opening set for Columbia, 11-9, in the
No. 6 match, but her challenger, Rachel Au, was able to secure the next three
games. Monica Stone played a tight match in the No. 5 position, forcing extra
points in the first game, but falling 14-12, 11-9, 11-5. Kate Calihan and Diya
Kumar both played tough matches in the No. 7 and 8 positions, respectively, but
were not able to come away with match victories.
The Lions will not be in action again until after the New Year,
a Jan. 12, 2013 date at home against the Brown Bears.
