NEW YORK - The Columbia men’s basketball team knocked down a season-high 12 three-pointers en route to a 69-58 win over intra-city rival Manhattan on Saturday. Sophomore Steve Frankoski dialed in six three-pointers for a game-high 18 points to lead the Lions (6-5) to a victory in their final game of the 2012 calendar year.

Columbia jumped out to an early 14-2 lead to start the game, and the Lions stifling defense held Manhattan to just one field goal through the first half of play.

The Jaspers’ first-half offense went through junior Rhamel Brown, who tallied nine points and three rebounds to lead the team. Shots were tough to come by for the Jaspers (3-8), who had trouble solving the Columbia defense and shot just 7-of-25 (28-percent) from the field as the Lions took a 34-17 lead at the break.

Brown continued to spark the Manhattan offense in the second half scoring seven-straight points to trim the Columbia lead to 34-24 at the 17:10 juncture. After beginning the second with a four minute scoring drought, the Lions offense once again used a three-point barage to garner a 12-6 run to extend the lead to 46-30, capped by a trey from the right wing by Noah Springwater, with 11:10 remaining.

An old-fashioned three-point play by sophomore Alex Rosenberg extended the cushion to 17 with 7:30 left to play. However, Manhattan continued to battle inside behind Brown, who finished with 25 points and eight rebounds, to put together several runs in the second half. More timely shooting and free-throw shooting down the stretch ultimately keyed Columbia to the victory.

Rosenberg was a big factor in the game, scoring 12 points on 7-for-7, shooting from the foul line, to go with nine rebounds and four steals. Senior Brian Barbour posted 14 points and six assists in the game.

The Lions will begin the 2013 calendar year on Wednesday, January 2 at 7 p.m. as they host Colgate at 7:00 p.m.
