Live Stats vs. Cal Poly
NEW YORK - Just one week after a 15th-place showing at the
50th Ken Kraft Midlands Championships, the Columbia wrestling team will be back
in action Sunday, Jan. 6 at the Cal Poly Mustang Duals. Competition for
Columbia begins in Mott Gym in San Luis Obispo, Calif. at 4 p.m. EST with a
match up against the host Cal Poly. Matches against San Francisco State and CSU
Bakersfield will follow at 6 p.m. EST and 8 p.m. EST, respectively.
Scouting Cal Poly
The Mustangs have been idle since Dec. 16 when they competed at the Reno
Tournament of Champions. Cal Poly's lone place winner at the event came at 157
pounds with junior Kyle Chené (12-6) capturing fourth. As a team, the
Mustangs finished 20th among the 27 teams in action.
Devon Lotito is the only ranked grappler for Cal Poly,
holding down the 19 slot in the most recent Intermat rankings released Jan. 1,
with an 18-6 record. At 184 pounds, Sean Dougherty has raced out to a 14-7
record, while Bale Kastl carries an impressive 11-3 mark at 149 pounds into the
Mustang Duals. At 285 pounds, Atticus Disney also sports a winning mark of
10-6, but has not competed since suffering an injury at the Las Vegas
Invitational Nov. 30.
Scouting San
Francisco State
In just its second dual match of the season, the SF State wrestling team
improved to 1-1 with a 42-6 trouncing of Simpson on Thursday night. The Gators
notched four wins by forfeit, while taking four other matches by fall,
technical fall, major decision and decision.
Naveed Bagheri and Conrad Snell each picked up victories at
141 and 149 pounds, respectively. Bagheri improved to 7-3 with a 16-0 technical
fall, while Snell used a fall (2:59) to raise his record to 6-3. The Gators
continued to dominate the middle weight classes, as Vicente Aboytes captured
his ninth win of the year at 157 pounds with a 19-5 major decision, while
Isaiah Jimenez defeated Brady Beaman, 7-4, at 165 pounds.
Scouting CSU
Bakersfield
The Roadrunners are coming off a 29-9 downing at the hands of Rutgers Thursday
evening at home. The loss dropped
CSUB to 4-2 in dual action this season.
The highlight of the night for CSUB came in the 133-pound
match where Ian Nickell recorded his 21st win of the season with a 7-1 decision
over Rutger's Vincent Dellfave. Fellow redshirt freshman David Meza also
notched a win over the Sacrlet Knights with a thrilling overtime pin in the
165-pound match. Meza enters the Mustang Duals with a 13-9 overall mark.
CSUB's lone ranked wrestler, No. 19 Bryce Hammond, did not
compete Thursday, but holds a 25-8 record at 174 pounds this season.
Columbia Probables
125 - Penn Gottfried enters this
weekend with a 5-6 overall mark, 1-2 in dual competition. Last time out,
Gottfried went 1-2 at the Midlands Championships. His lone dual victory of the
season came in a 4-1 decision over Drexel's Jacob Goodwin back on Nov. 24.
Robert Dyar has also seen time at 125 pounds, wrestling to a 6-2 record,
earning the top placewinner spot at the New York State Championships 'B'
Tournament.
133 - Joe Moita posts
a .500 (5-5) mark as the Lions head out west. In dual action this season, Moita
is 1-1 with a 10-2 major decision over Drexel's Jordan Hart at the NE Duals
Nov. 24.
141 - Matt Bystol
notched his second victory of the season at the Midlands, pinning Northwestern's
Matt Greene in 0:51. Bystol went 1-2 at the Midlands and is 0-2 in dual action
this season. Ryan Ponte has wrestled to a 7-4 mark, including a third-place
showing at the New York State Championships 'B' Tournament, but is just 0-1 in
dual competition.
149 - No. 10 Steve Santos found himself on
the podium for the third time this season, securing fourth place at the
Midlands. Santos improved to 16-2 on the year with five wins, including
victories over then No. 12 Eric Grajales from Michigan and No. 10 Nick Lester
from Oklahoma. Santos is 3-0 in dual competition this season.
157 - No. 15 Jake
O'Hara is second on the team with 13 wins this season to go with just three
losses. O'Hara notched three wins at the Midlands; a technical fall over Mike
Schmidlin from Sunnyvale Wrestling Club and two decisions over opponents from
Michigan and Purdue. He stands at 2-1 in dual matches this year.
165 - Josh
Houldsworth is 9-4 overall with a 2-1 record in dual matches this season.
Houldsworth notched a pair of wins at the Midlands over staunch opponents. Sam
Bennett from Northern Illinois lost via major decision, 10-0, to Houldsworth to
open the tournament and then Joe Latham from Oregon State went down, 4-2.
174 - Stephen
West enters the Mustang Duals with a 12-4 mark after going 2-2 at the Midlands.
West secured decisions over Rider's James Brundage, 7-4, and Virginia Tech's
Austin Gabel in sudden victory fashion, 3-1. Entering this weekend, West is 1-2
in dual matches.
184 - Drew
Rebling picked up two wins at the Midlands to improve to 5-9 on the year.
Marcus Shrewsbury from Northwestern went down in a 6-2 decision, while Reuben
Franklin from CSUB was pinned in 4:04. Rebling is 0-2 in dual matches this
season.
197 - Nick Mills
earned a 9-7 record before the turn of the New Year, going 1-2 in dual matchs.
At the Midlands, Mills garnered a 7-3 decision of Northern Iowa's AJ MacBroom.
Mills dual victory came on Nov. 24 over Rutgers' Hayden Hrymack, 4-0.
285 - Chris Manna
finds himself at 3-8 heading into the Mustang Duals. Manna's last win came over
Mount St. Vincent's Brian Slattery, an 18-6 major decision, on Nov. 17. Manna
is 0-2 in dual matches this season.
