NEW YORK - A total of four matches in three days awaits the
No. 9 Columbia men's squash team (3-2), as the Lions travel to New Haven, Conn.
this weekend. Action will begin on Friday, Jan. 18 at 3 p.m. against No. 7 Franklin
& Marshall. Saturday, Jan. 19 sees the Lions take on No. 10 St. Lawrence at
11:30 a.m. and No. 15 George Washington at 4:30 p.m. before concluding the trip
Sunday, Jan. 20 against No. 20 Bowdoin at 2 p.m.
The Lions are coming of a 2-1 weekend that included a pair of
8-1 wins over No. 18 Brown and No. 16 Navy. Ramit Tandon, the nation's
second-ranked player, won all three of his matches to improve to 5-0 on the
year. Tandon has yet to drop a set during his sophomore campaign.
Mohamed AbdelMaksoud and Tony Zou competed as the Lions No.
2 and 3, respectively, both going 2-1. Graham Miao has recorded a 3-1 record as
the Lions' No. 4 this year, including come-from-behind wins over Brown's Eamon
O'Conner and Navy's Hunter Beck.
Scouting Franklin
& Marshall
The Diplomats improved to 5-3 with an 8-1 triumph over No. 13 Penn Wednesday,
Jan. 16. Franklin & Marshall is 2-2 this season against Ivy League
competition, defeating No. 8 Dartmouth as well, but falling to No. 1 Princeton
and No. 6 Yale.
Guilherme de Melo has played the No. 1 position in seven
matches for the Diplomats, earning a 3-4 mark. Melo downed Penn's Dan Greenberg
Wednesday in four sets, 11-3, 7-11, 11-7, 11-6. Mauricio Sedano filled the top
spot against Connecticut College, winning in straight sets, but has competed as
the No. 2 in all other matches. Sedano has a combined 5-3 record and has won
three of his last four matches.
Scouting St. Lawrence
After opening the year with three consecutive 9-0 victories, the Saints have
lost their last four matches. St. Lawrence last took the courts Sunday, Jan. 13
at No. 4 Cornell, falling to the Big Red, 6-3.
Ibrahim Khan and Kyle Ogilvy have each seen time in the top
spot for St. Lawrence. Ogilvy went 2-1 as the No. 1 before dropping to the
second slot. In his last three matches, Ogilvy is winless and has won just one
set along the way. Khan has also had limited success at the top of the Saints'
lineup, going 1-1 as the No. 2 and 0-2 in the No. 1 position. Against Cornell,
Amr Khaled Khalifa played as the Saints' No. 1, defeating Nicholas Sachive in
straight sets.
Scouting George
Washington
The Colonials find themselves at 7-3 following a 6-3 loss to Navy Wednesday. The
match against the Mids was the first for George Washington since returning from
a training trip to the Cayman Islands.
Islam El-Fiky has played as the No. 1 for the Colonials this
season, garnering a 7-3 record. Of El-Fihky's seven wins, six of them have come
via a three-set sweep. Omar Sobhy and Ahmed Abedel-Latif have split time at the
No. 2 and 3 positions, with each having lost just one matches this season.
Scouting Bowdoin
After opening the season with four losses, the Polar Bears have won each of
their last two matches and lost just one individual contest in that span.
Bowdoin knocked off Northeastern, 9-0, on Jan. 13 and then downed No. 23 Amherst
on Jan. 16 by a score of 8-1.
Andrew Hilboldt, the Polar Bears' No. 1 player, leads all
Bowdoin players with a 5-1 record. Hilboldt's last two wins over opponents from
Northeastern and Amherst have both been beaten in straight sets.
