NEW YORK - The No. 73 women's tennis team will begin the
2013 spring season Sunday, Jan. 27 on the campus of the University Georgia as
one of four teams competing in the Athens, Ga. bracket of the ITA Kick-Off
Weekend. No. 40 Oklahoma State and No. 72 Georgia State will join the No. 6
Bulldogs and Lions for the two-day event.
Oklahoma State and Georgia State get things started at 9
a.m. Sunday with the match between Columbia and Georgia to follow at 2 p.m. The
winners of those matches will play Monday, Jan. 28 at 2 p.m. for the right to
play at the ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championship hosted by Virginia
next month. UGA will provide live stats for all matches this weekend HERE.
Sunday's match between the Bulldogs and Lions will be the
season-opener for both squads. Georgia concluded the 2012 season with a 24-5
record and ranked No. 6 in the nation. The Bulldogs have four student-athletes
ranked in the ITA singles poll, headlined by No. 8 Lauren Herring who went 20-2
during fall competition. On the doubles side, Herring and Kate Fuller comprise
the 15th-ranked doubles pair.
Columbia enters the match with three ranked singles players
and the nation's 37th-ranked doubles team.
The Cowgirls and Panthers both head into the weekend with
1-0 records. Oklahoma State swept Wichita State on the road on Jan. 21, while Georgia
State downed No. 72 Syracuse, 5-2.
