Update on Columbia Football

Lean and Mean

A smart CEO once said that if you can’t measure something, you can’t control it. This is why Columbia Football has invested in a new body composition scale to measure and evaluate the muscle mass and body fat of our football players. We are measuring body composition to evaluate each of our players. 

Lean muscle mass is key to success in football. It is what enables our offensive linemen to protect the quarterback, our running backs to hit the hole, our linebackers to shed their blocks, our secondary to lock down the other team’s receivers. Teams with optimal body composition have better stamina in the fourth quarter of games, and the ability to stay on the field all season long.

With the spring semester strength training regimen in full swing, we are focused on setting goals for body composition and meeting or exceeding them. Strength Coach Ryan Cidzik has our guys working hard to ensure that they meet their set weight and BMI targets.

We are already making significant progress. From the start of Training Camp last summer to the end of the season, we saw our players improve their lean muscle mass, and decrease their body fat.

Here are the percentage changes in body fat by position (among returning players) from August 19, 2012 to November 12, 2012:

 

Lower is better, most of the time

QB          -16%

OL          -12%

LB           -9%

TE/FB    -2%

DL          -2%

DB          -1%

P/K         +3%

RB          +4%

WR         +9%

 

And the percentage changes in lean muscle mass by position (among returning players) during the same period:

 

Higher is better

QB          +4%

WR         +2%

P/K         +1%

LB           +0.3%

RB          +0.2%

DB          +0.1%

DL          -0.2%

OL          -0.1%

TE/FB    -1%

 

On average, our players are getting leaner and stronger – even during the season.  Our expectations will continue to grow during the Spring Season. By training camp – we expect body fat to either continue to decrease or even out and lean body mass to increase.

Just a reminder, Columbia Football will celebrate the tremendous accomplishments of Marcellus Wiley '97CC at the Ivy Football Association (IFA) Dinner on Thursday, February 7. This year's dinner will be held for the first time at the Marriot Marquis hotel in Times Square. You can get more information at  www.ivyfootballassociation.org.
