NEW YORK - For the first time since the 2006-07 season, the Columbia men's swimming and diving team defeated the Naval Academy in dual-meet action on Friday, Feb. 1. Kevin Quinn, Philipp Gaissert and Dominik Koll each posted a pair of wins in the meet, as the Lions downed the Midshipmen, 178-122.

Columbia opened the meet with a nail-biting victory in the 200 meter medley relay, as the 'B' squad of Michael Fox-Moles, Matthew Swallow, Alex Ngan and John Wright won with a time of 1:40.29, which was nearly .02 seconds faster than the Lions 'A' squad. Wright finished strong holding off the quartet of Omar Arafa, Stanley Wong, David Jakl and Daniel Gosek, who placed second with a time of 1:32.11.

Koll continued his excellent second season by winning the 200 freestyle in 1:39.47. Jakl grabbed the runner-up finish by touching the wall at 1:41.19, just .14 seconds faster than Navy's Hugh Davidson.

In the next event, a 1-2-3 sweep in the 100 backstroke helped built an early Columbia lead. Fox-Moles took first place with a season-best time of 50.61, with Arafa taking second in 51:43 and first-year Benjamin Xu placing third in 51.29.

Swallow swam a season- best time of 56.94 in the 100 breaststroke for a strong second place finish in the event. Quinn followed in the 200 butterfly clocking in with a career-best time of 1:48.90, gave the Lions its fourth individual win of the day.

The Lions represented well in the 50 freestyle following a victory from Phillip Gaissert, who swam a career-best time of 20.65. Gosek was not far behind with a second place time of 20.71 and Ngan tied for third with Navy's Robbie Parker at 20.97. Gaissert returned in the 100 freestyle for his second win of the day, touching the wall at 45.37.

Quinn also posted his second victory in the 200 backstroke with another a career-best time of 1:50.45. Quinn led the 1-2-3 sweep in the event as Xu took second place with a season-best 1:50.99 and Jakl took third at 1:53.00.

Koll's second win of the meet came in a tight finish in the 500 freestyle, clocking in at 4:33.26. The sophomore held off Navy's Thomas Duvall by .36 seconds to take the event.

The Lions received a big lift on the 3-meter board with Micah Rembrandt tallying 327.15 points for first place. Rembrandt placed second in the 1-meter board to lead the Columbia diving core with 313.05 points. Senior Jason Collazo posted third place finishes in both events with 310.95 points in the 3-meter and 298.13 in the 1-meter. Columbia ended the meet with a victory in the 200 IM by Eric Traub at 1:54.74.

Up next, the 6-2, 3-2 Lions return to Uris pool for the final time of the 2012-13 season on Friday, Feb. 8 at 4 p.m to host the Princeton Tigers. Join Columbia on Friday as it honors the Class of 2013 and looks for its six straight dual-meet win on the year.
