NEW YORK - Columbia shot over 50 percent from the floor and
out-rebounded Harvard, 33-22, en route to a 78-63 win over Harvard in Levien
Gymnasium. The win halts a
seven-game Harvard win streak vs. the Lions (10-10, 2-4), dating back to February 14, 2009.
In a tightly contested first half, Columbia held a 38-34 edge at
the break. The Lions shot 51.9
percent from the floor, including 4-of-7 from behind the arc. All four threes were scored by Steve
Frankoski, who led all players with 20 points at the half. Harvard (13-7, 5-1) also shot
well at 47.6 percent from the floor and 4-of-8 from the three-point line.
The teams traded baskets to start the second period, until a layup
by Maodo Lo sparked a 6-0 run by the Lions to give Columbia a 10-point lead at
the 17-minute mark.
Harvard got baskets by Wesley Saunders, Steve Moundou-Missi and
Siyani Chambers to cut the lead to four with nine minutes to play, but Columbia
answered with a three-pointer by Lo on the next possession to push the lead
back out to seven.
Columbia then got back-to-back scores from a Brian Barbour layup and
an Alex Rosenberg three-pointer to give Columbia a 12-point lead with just
under eight minutes to play.
Saunders made two free throws for Harvard, but five consecutive points
by Barbour, along with jumpers by Rosenberg and Frankoski over a 96-second span pushed the
Columbia lead to 18 with 4:59 remaining.
From that point on, it was a free throw shooting contest, with six
of Harvard's next 10 points coming from the line, and seven of Columbia's next
10 also coming from the charity stripe.
Columbia shot 50.9 percent form the floor, 9-of-17 from the three,
13-of-15 from the free throw line.
The Lions had 18 assists on 28 baskets and 10 offensive rebounds to
Harvard four.
Frankoski and Saunders led all players with 27 points. Frankoski added an assist and three
steals, while Saunders added a rebound, one block and two steals.
Rosenberg totaled 13 points and four rebounds, Lo finished with 12
points, all in the second half, and Cory Osetkowski finished with 10 points,
nine rebounds, one assist and two blocks.
Barbour finished with eight points and a game-high eight assists
in 39 minutes of action.
Columbia returns to action on Friday, February 15 at Brown for a 7
p.m. game.
