NEW YORK - The 42nd-ranked Columbia men's tennis team will
begin competition at the 2013 ECAC Men's Indoor Championships Friday, Feb. 15
at 11 a.m. when they take on George Washington.
The Lions represent the second-seed in the eight-team
bracket, while the Colonials are the seventh seed. Columbia holds the highest
national ranking of all the teams in this year's ECAC Championship, but
defending champion and No. 47 Harvard is the top seed. The Crimson will wrap up
the first day of competition with a 6 p.m. match against Ivy League rival Yale.
The tournament opens Friday at 8 a.m. with Dartmouth taking
on Princeton in the 3/6 seed matchup. The remaining first round match will
feature Cornell and Brown in the 4/5 seed contest at 3 p.m.
Columbia will carry a 2-2 record into the ECAC
Championships. The Lions last competed on Feb. 1, when they beat Fordham 6-1 at
the Dick Savitt Tennis Center. Prior to that match, Columbia toppled Louisville
at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend tournament in Athens, Ga. The Cardinals are ranked
35th in the last ITA national poll.
George Washington is 2-1 through the early stages of the
2013 season. After a season-opening loss to then No. 70 Cornell, the Colonials
have posted back-to-back 4-3 wins over East Carolina and No. 67 Old Dominion.
Columbia's Winston Lin and Princeton's Matija Pecotic are
the only to ranked singles players in action at the ECAC Championship. Lin is
ranked 60th, while Pecotic is the top-ranked player at the event, coming in at third
in Tuesday's poll.
Ashok Narayana and Max Schnur, Columbia's top doubles team,
have the highest national ranking at the ECAC Championships, earning the 20th spot
in this week's poll. Princeton's Pecotic and Zack McCourt and Yale's Marc
Powers and Daniel Hoffman are ranked 29th and 39th, respectively.
