NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Playing in its final match of the season,
the Columbia women's squash team won matches No. 5-9 on the ladder to defeat
Middlebury at the 2013 College Squash Association National Team Championships
Sunday. With the win, Columbia will finish the season ranked No. 11 in the
nation.
Columbia and Middlebury met back on Jan. 26 in Vermont with
the Panthers downing the Lions, 6-3. In that match, Middlebury won the bottom
five spots on the ladder, each of which Columbia won today.
Co-captains Katie Quan and Skylar Dickey recorded sweeps in
the No. 7 and 8 matches, respectively. Quan downed Amanda Chen by a score of
11-5, 11-6, 11-5, while Dickey won a tough first set, 14-12, before taking the
next two, 11-7, 11-5.
In the No. 5 match, Leah Barnet went up 2-0 and was then
able to hold off Zoe Carey's comeback to take the fifth game, 11-9.
Diya Kumar and Monica Stone posted Columbia final two wins,
each coming from behind in their respective matches. In the No. 9 match, Kumar
trailed Anne Ulrich, 0-1 and 1-2, before winning the final two games by
matching 11-4 scores. In the No. 6 match, Stone went down two games to Saskia
Pownall-Gray, but recovered to secure the next three games. Stone eased through
the third game, 11-2, and then took the final two games, 11-7, 11-8.
Despite the team season coming to an end Sunday, the CSA
Individual National Championships are slated for March 1-3 in Hartford, Conn.
