NEW YORK - The No. 11 Columbia men´s squash team (7-8) will
venture to New Haven, Conn. this weekend in search of the 2013 Hoehn Cup (B
Division) at the College Squash Association National Team Championships. The
Lions will begin play Friday, Feb. 22 with an opening round matchup against No.
14 Navy (24-7) at 3:30 p.m.
Columbia and Navy met back on Jan. 13 with the Lions
capturing an 8-1 victory over the Midshipmen. Columbia is 2-2 against Navy
since joining the varsity ranks in 2010-11, including a 5-4 win over the Mids
at last year´s CSA Team Nationals.
The Lions have had a good deal of success this season at the
top of the ladder. Ramit Tandon, the 2012 CSA Individual National Championship
runner-up has posted a 12-3 record at the top spot, while Mohamed AbdelMaksoud
is 10-3 competing at the No. 2 and 3 spots.
The Mids have played an extensive schedule this season,
competing more than twice as many times as the Lions. After a strong start to
the season, Navy has found itself on the losing end in three of its last four
matches. The last time out, No. 7 Franklin and Marshall downed the Mids on
Senior Day in Annapolis, 8-1.
Mitch Bottini paces Navy with 25 victories this season,
playing primarily in the bottom third of the ladder. Hunter Bouchard and Andrew
McGuinness, both middle ladder contributors, are second on the team with 22
wins.
If Columbia gets past Navy, it will next take on the winner
of the No. 10 Williams versus No. 15 Bates match Saturday. CollegeSquashAssociation.com
will have updates from all of this weekend's matches in New Haven.
