ORLANDO, Fla. - The Columbia baseball team dropped a 6-1
decision at UCF Sunday afternoon in game three of the series at Jay Bergman
The Lions (2-8), recording just four hits with six costly
errors, led 1-0 through the first three innings but UCF (13-8) rallied with
four runs in the bottom of the third frame and led the rest of the way.
Alex Black hit an RBI single in the first to score Jordan
Serena and give Columbia the first lead of the game.
A leadoff single in the third by UCF’s Tommy Williams started
the Knights’ go-ahead inning. UCF then took advantage of two Columbia errors on
mishandled bunts. A sacrifice fly by Eric Hempe and a two-run double by Chris
Taladay sent three Knights to the plate to make it a 3-1 game. A wild pitch advanced Taladay to third, and
an RBI single by Austin Johnston sent him home for the final damage of the
The Knights tacked on another run in the fourth thanks to a
home run by Jeramy Matos to push their lead to 5-1.
UCF added an insurance run in the eighth by taking advantage
of Columbia’s sixth error of the day as Williams cranked an RBI double to score
Brian Adkins earned the win for the Knights as he gave up
zero runs on three hits with five strikeouts on the day.
The Lions will look to even the series in game four set for
Monday, March 18 at 6:30 p.m.
