DALLAS - After going 2-1 at the Blue-Gray National Tennis
Classic, the 34th-ranked Columbia men's tennis team will now head to Texas for
a three-match swing for spring break. The Lions will first visit Southern
Methodist on Tuesday, March 19, with matches at No. 36 TCU and UT-Arlington to
follow on Wednesday and Friday, respectively.
After losing a tough match to No. 47 Texas Tech in the
opening round of the Blue-Gray Classic, Columbia bounced back with a 4-0 sweep
over William & Mary and a come-from-behind win on the final day against No.
No. 34 Winston Lin continued his torrid win streak, coming
away with three wins in Montgomery, Ala. The sophomore has now won nine
straight matches and is 8-2 at the top of the Lions' lineup. Max Schnur has
also been a consistent force for Columbia, winning his last eight matches.
Schnur's win over Eric Sock Sunday, clinched the Lions' gritty 4-3 victory over
No. 38 Nebraska.
After a 0-4 start to the season, SMU has won four of its last six contests.
Tuesday's match against Columbia will be the second of five consecutive matches
for the Mustangs at home. SMU began the homestand on March 12 with a 5-2 defeat
Arturs Kazijeves and Nate Lammons pace the Mustangs with 5-4
singles records. Kazijevs has played all nine of his dual matches at the top
spot, while Lammons has played matches at Nos. 3-6.
The Horned Frogs have won five of their last six contests and enter Wednesday's
match ranked 36th in the nation. Prior to the match against Columbia at 6 p.m.
EST, TCU will host Prairie View A&M at 12 p.m.
The doubles team of Nick Chappell and Will Stein has
combined for an 8-3 record this season and is slotted 64th in the most recent
ITA doubles poll. Orlando Superlano holds the best singles record in dual
matches at 10-2, playing primarily as the No. 4 or 5.
The Mavericks are 5-7 following a loss on the road over the weekend at Wichita
State. The defeat was the third in
a row for UT-Arlington after being swept by Pacific on March 11 and losing to
Radford, 4-3, on March 13.
Carlos Arbiza and Marek Pesicka lead the Mustangs with 5-4
record and each has played a variety of spots in the lineup. In doubles,
Pesicka and Sebastian Erimiciolu are 4-0 when paired together with two wins in
the top match and two more when playing as the No. 2 team.
