FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Columbia softball team fell to Marist, 8-0, on Friday in its first game of the Colorado State Invitational. The Lions 9-9 were scheduled to face the host Rams later in the day, but that contest was moved to 3:30 EDT tomorrow due to inclement weather.
The Red Foxes (7-11) took a 1-0 lead in the second when Nicole Cheek led the frame off with a triple down the first base line and scored on the play after an error in rightfield. Marist added two more runs off an Alyssa Zahka two-run double in the third.
In the fifth, the Red Foxes loaded the bases with one out and Columbia’s fourth error of the game, bringing in a pair of runs to extend the margin to 5-0. Marist tacked on three more in the top of the seventh to put the game away.
First-years Nicole Borchard and Alyssa Swearingen each went 2-for-3 in the game. Alix Cook was 0-for-3, ending her streak of reaching base at 17 games.
Emily Kenyon suffered the defeat (3-3), tossing 4.1 innings and allowing four earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts.
