BOX SCORE

WEST POINT, N.Y. - Columbia pitcher Tim Giel threw a complete game while Nick Ferraresi homered twice at Army on Saturday to carry the Lions baseball team to a 5-1 victory in non-league action.

Ferraresi finished 3-for-5 on the day with three RBI and two runs to help Columbia (5-11) win its third straight game in just two days as the Black Knights dropped to 5-11 on the season.

It was the second straight day a Columbia pitcher threw a complete game as Giel (1-1) picked up his first victory of the season scattering nine hits and four strikeouts while letting up just one run. David Speer also completed a seven-inning game in the Lions' 2-1 victory over NYIT on Friday.

Columbia took a 2-0 lead in the second inning and did not trail the rest of the way. Aaron Silbar was hit by a pitch and advanced to third after Mike Fischer smacked a double to center field. Nick Crucet came up to the plate next with a double of his own to send both Silbar and Fischer home to score and put the Lions ahead.

Ferraresi made it a 3-0 Columbia advantage with a leadoff homerun in the fourth to keep the Lions rolling.

Designated hitter Joey Falcone hit a leadoff single in the sixth frame and soon scored as Ferraresi homered for the second time to make it a 5-0 ballgame.

Meanwhile, Giel's strong arm held Army scoreless through the first six innings before the Black Knights got on the board in the seventh. Jacob Page, Michael Sands and Connor Love hit back-to-back singles to send Page to the plate for Army's lone run of the game. Giel got out of the jam with a strikeout and groundout and was able to hold them scoreless over the final two innings en route to the second complete game of his career.

The Lions will return to West Point, N.Y. tomorrow for an 11 a.m. contest vs. NYIT. Columbia recently opened its home season with a doubleheader sweep of the Bears, 2-1 and 2-0, on Friday and will look to make it a season sweep over NYIT tomorrow.
