DIRECTIONS AND COURSE MAP OF OVERPECK LAKE
NEW YORK – The Columbia women’s rowing team has a busy weekend on tap as they host a pair of regattas at Overpeck Lake in Ridgefield Park, N.J. The Lions host No. 3 Princeton on Saturday and will race for the Woodbury Cup on Sunday with Dartmouth joining the race as a guest.
Columbia checks in at No. 16 in the CRCA National Polls after topping both Yale and Penn to claim the Connell Cup on March 30. The Lions used a strong start in the first 500 meters of the race and never looked back, winning by 5.6 seconds over the Bulldogs
The Tigers knocked off a pair of top-20 teams in Brown and Ohio State last weekend to claim the Class of 1987 Trophy in Lake Carnegie. Princeton’s head coach Lori Dauphiny was the Columbia women's novice coach before crossing the river to join the Tigers.
Last season, Columbia came within five seconds of Princeton's varsity eight while rowing as a guest in the Class of 1975 Regatta on Lake Carnegie.
The Woodbury Cup, for competition between Columbia and Northeastern, was inaugurated in the spring of 2005, established by her teammates in memory of Melanie "Mel" Woodbury '96BC, 1996 Columbia captain and MVP. The Lions won the inaugural race for the Cup in 2005.
A native of Bonners Ferry, Idaho, Woodbury was living in Seattle with her boyfriend and their son when she traveled back to Idaho for her sister's wedding. Returning from the wedding in December 2002, she was killed in an automobile accident in Ritzville, Wash.
Northeastern raced against No. 2 California on the west coast last weekend, and was swept in three races. The Huskies competed yesterday on the Schuykill River in Philadelphia in the Orange Challenge Cup against Penn and Syracuse. The Lions will welcome back another familiar face in Huskies head coach Joe Wilhelm, who was one of the first Columbia head women's coaches, in the mid-1980's, and later was Director of Rowing for the Columbia men's teams before heading to Boston to become an assistant for Northeastern.
