MT. PLEASANT, Mich. – The honors continue to pour in for members of the Columbia baseball team as sophomore designated hitter Joey Falcone was selected to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Northeast Region Second Team, as announced by the organization Tuesday.

Falcone, in his first year with the Lions, worked his way from pinch hitter to clean-up hitter, with a penchant for power and timely hitting. Falcone tied with senior Alex Black for the best batting average on the squad. His .331 average at the dish placed him in a tie for fifth in the Ivy League, while his five home runs tied him for the third best total in the Ancient Eight.

Falcone racked up 42 hits in 127 at bats, including 13 extra base knocks that led to a .520 slugging percentage. That power proved important for Columbia in a number of games this season.

On April 6, Falcone hit his second home run of the season in the seventh inning against Yale, tying the game. The Lions would go on to win that contest, setting the stage to win 16 of their final 18 conference games. The Brooklyn, N.Y. native’s bat came through again against Penn. Tied 2-2 in the bottom of the ninth in the opening contest of a four-game set, Falcone drilled a homer into the Harlem River, moving Columbia to within one victory of the Lou Gehrig title on April 26.

This marks the second straight season in which Columbia has had a player selected to the ABCA Northeast Region Team. Dario Pizzano earned a spot on the second team last season.
