NEW YORK – New Columbia heavyweight rowing head coach Scott Alwin has tabbed Emerson Curry to join his staff for the upcoming 2013-14 season.

Curry joins the Lions after a successful three-year stint as an assistant lightweight coach at his alma mater, Dartmouth. While there, the Big Green’s lightweight eights earned five medals in championship regattas (EARC and IRA).

“Emerson is an Ivy League champion rower, a seasoned assistant coach, a proven recruiter and a student of the sport,” Alwin stated. “He is a great fit to help change the trajectory of Columbia heavyweight rowing. Emerson will be instrumental in teaching, training and recruiting rowers and coxswains that can help this program win our share of big races in upcoming years. I am very pleased that he has joined the Columbia Rowing coaching staff.”

From 2008-10, Curry was a lightweight assistant at Harvard under Charley Butt, the Crimson’s longtime lightweight skipper who was just appointed head coach of the heavyweights. Harvard’s top lightweight crew medaled four times at championship regattas during Curry’s tenure in Boston.

As a lightweight oarsman at Dartmouth, Curry won the Eastern Sprints and set a new course record in the varsity lightweight eight race in 2007. He was captain of the 2008 squad and earned All-Ivy League honors as a senior.  In 2009, Curry was inducted to the Dartmouth Athletics Hall of Fame.

Curry, a Princeton, N.J. native, earned his degree in Anthropology in 2008.
