ITHACA, N.Y. – The Columbia field hockey team came up just short, falling at Cornell, 3-2, on Saturday. The Lions drop to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in Ivy League play.

First-year Katie Ruesterholz scored both goals, bringing her season total to seven, tying her with Julia Garrison '10CC for the most scores by a first-year. It marks Ruesterholz' third multi-goal performance of the season.

“Obviously, to dominate statistically and come out with something less than a win is a disappointment,” stated head coach Marybeth Freeman. “I thought Claire (Kneizys) and Lauren (Skudalski) did a good job stepping up in the backfield, but overall we need to look at our efficiency in our attacking half of the field.”

“No question our team works hard, but we need to be productive to get the results we need.”

Columbia outshot Cornell, 15-10, and held a 9-2 advantage in corners for the game.

Ruesterholz got Columbia on the board in the sixth minute, tipping in a Zoe Blake shot that was set up off a penalty corner.

The Big Red (3-3, 1-1) netted the equalizer five minutes later after Katy Weeks received a pass from Ann DiPastina and drove to the net to make it 1-1. Taylor Sandiford put Cornell ahead, 2-1, just over two minutes before halftime on a shot from just inside the circle on a quick restart after a foul call and the Big Red held the lead into the break.

In the 46th minute, Hannah Balleza provided an insurance tally on a reverse stick shot from the top of the circle. The goal proved to be important because Ruesterholz ound the back of the cage to pull Columbia within, 3-2, with just under two minutes to go.

The Lions had one last opportunity to send the game to overtime when DiPastina was given a yellow card with 33 seconds remaining. Ruesterholz got off one more shot with 25 seconds remaining, but Elizabeth Schaeffler made the save to preserve the win for Cornell.

The Lions will head to Fairfield tomorrow, Sep. 29, for a 1 p.m. contest.
