PRINCETON, N.J. – The Columbia field hockey team dropped a 5-0 decision to No. 11 and defending National Champions Princeton on Friday night. The Lions (3-6, 1-2) will aim to get back on track on Sunday, Oct. 6 when they host UMass-Lowell for a 1 p.m. contest.

Junior goalkeeper Marlee Silverstein had a stellar game coming off the bench, making nine saves in 46 minutes of action.

The Tigers (6-3, 3-0) raced out to the lead just 24 seconds in. Cassidy Arner fielded an aerial pass by Amanda Bird and stick-handled her way to the left side of the circle and rifled a shot into the net to give Princeton a 1-0 edge.

In the seventh minute, Kimberly Pianucci made the initial save on a shot from Allison Evans, but Cat Caro picked up the loose ball and scored to make it 2-0.

Columbia’s first scoring chance came 21 minutes after a quick restart after a foul. Kyle Marsh slashed through the middle, but her shot was kicked away by Tigers’ goalkeeper Anya Gersoff.

Princeton countered after the Lions’ attack and Arner was the beneficiary of a centering pass from Alexandra Mango and recorded her second goal of the contest in the 23rd minute. Shortly after, the Tigers tacked on another score to extend the margin to 4-0.

Another golden opportunity for the Lions was denied in the 26th minute after Anna Scipioni faked a shot off a penalty corner and found Lauren Skudalski on the doorstep. However, Gersoff stacked her pads and made the save to keep Columbia off the board.

Allison Evans banked one off a Columbia defender from a sharp angle on the right side to give Princeton a five-goal advantage in the 31st minute.

The Lions were more aggressive to start the second half, which generated some exciting back-and-forth action. Silverstein and Gersoff matched each other save-for-save to prevent any further scoring.
