BRONX, N.Y. – For the 16th consecutive year, the Columbia women's cross country is the winner of the Metropolitan Championships. On Friday, Oct. 11 at Van Cortlandt Park, despite sitting its top five runners, the Lions totaled 25 points to win by an overwhelming 36-point margin in the 12-team field.

In the women’s 5k, Madeline Rathbun crossed the finish line with a time of 18:24.66 for the individual title. First-year Pegah Khosravi-Kamrani added a runner-up finish in 18:28.27 and senior Sarah Eagan placed fourth in 18:36.84 to give the Lions three runners in the top five. Columbia placed six runners in the top 11 including Emma Giantisco (eighth, 18:49.18), Sydney Segal (10th, 18:53.75) and Natalie Tanner (11th, 18:56.41).

Without its top 15 runners, the Columbia men grabbed a runner-up finish tallying 66 team points in this year’s Metropolitan Championships. Sophomore Marc Violone led the tight Columbia group in the men’s 8k race with an 11th-place time of 26:35.49. Shane Gianetti took 12th in 26:38.57, followed by Robert Napolitano (13th, 26:41.41) and Ben Eversole (14th, 26:42.46) for a solid day uptown.

Up next, the Lions will face one of its toughest challenges this season on Friday, Oct. 18 at the University of Wisconsin Adidas Invitational.
