BOX SCORE

NEW YORK – Sophomore goalkeeper Kyle Jackson made a diving stop on a Penn penalty kick in the second overtime Saturday night, as the Lions and Quakers went on finish in a 0-0 tie on the night that the Columbia soccer venue was dedicated the Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium.

In the 104th minute of the contest, Penn’s Austin Kinn was awarded a penalty kick after he was taken down by a hard tackle inside the penalty box. Kinn sent his attempt towards Jackson’s left, but the second-year keeper came up with his sixth save of the contest, leading to his third shutout of the season.

Columbia’s offense had a pair of excellent scoring opportunities near the end of the first half. Senior David Najem lined up a powerful shot in the 37th minute that just narrowly missed the net and first-year Rhys Williams had his shot from inside the 18 turned away by Penn’s Tyler Kinn less than a minute later.

The Penn offense came alive in the second half, ripping off 10 shots. Stephen Baker and Duke Lacroix each had prime scoring chances in the final 10 minutes of the second half, but Jackson and the Columbia defense stepped up to shut down both attacks.

The Lions’ best chance in the second half came in the 78th minute when first-year Joe Morris crossed a nice ball into the penalty area that Williams fielded before rifling off a shot on goal that Kinn stepped in front of.

In the first extra period, Alex Murphy nearly clinched the match for the Quakers with a blast from 25 yards out that ricocheted off the right post, but the ball sailed out of bounds.

Jackson’s big save in the second overtime became the highlight of the match for the Lions, as multiple late shot attempts from Columbia attackers were blocked before reaching the goal.

Columbia, now 0-0-2 in the Ivy League and 5-2-2 overall, will take a break from conference action to visit UConn Tuesday, Oct. 15 in Storrs, Conn. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
