NEW YORK – First-place Yale ran its Ivy League winning streak to 21 by handing the Columbia volleyball team a 3-1 loss Saturday evening in Levien Gymnasium. Down 2-0 on the match, the Lions rallied for a comeback with a third set victory, but ultimately fell short by scores of 21-25, 12-25, 25-23, 16-25.

Sophomore Bailey Springer led the Columbia (5-11, 3-4 Ivy League) attack with a double-double of 15 kills and 15 digs, while first-year Zoe Jacobs posted 12 kills on an impressive .417 hitting percentage.

Yale (13-3, 7-0 Ivy League) had four hitters reach double-figure kills, led by the match-high performance of 20 kills on a .514 hitting percentage by Brittani Steinberg.

Yale jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the first set, forcing Columbia to call timeout. A kill by Zoe Jacobs then broke the run to get the Lions on the board. Columbia played tough the rest of the set, trimming its deficit to three, 24-21, before a Polan kill finished off the Yale win.

The Bulldogs carried momentum into the second set, dominating on the attack with a .359 hitting percentage and an 18 to 7 kill advantage.

However, the Lions bounced back with a third set come-from-behind victory. The Bulldogs were in front the majority of the way, leading by as much as five before Columbia rallied. Trailing 17-12, the Lions called timeout and pulled out a 7-2 run to even the score at 19-all. Yale regained the lead once more at 21-19 before a tight battle broke out with three more tied scores. Knotted at 23-23, sophomores Lucy Tilton and Katarina Jovicic smacked huge kills to boost Columbia on top for good.

Yale came back in the fourth set, scoring first and leading the entire way to remain a top the Ivy League standings.

Up next, Lions remain home to host New York State and Ivy League rival Cornell on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 2 p.m. in Levien Gym.
