HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth’s Ali Savage recorded three goals and an assist to hand the Columbia field hockey team a 5-2 defeat on Sunday. The Lions drop to 6-9 overall and 2-3 in Ivy League play.

Sophomore Christina Freibott extended her scoring streak to three games in the 14th minute, creating a turnover and weaving her way to the right corner of the semi-circle. Her hard shot found the left corner of the cage to give Columbia the 1-0 advantage.

The Big Green (6-8, 2-3) capitalized on a giveaway in the Lions zone to tie the score in the 28th minute. Sophomore Marlee Silverstein came way out of the net to try and take away the passing lane, but Maggie Scanlon’s centering feed found the stick of Savage who buried the chance into the open net.

The Lions held a 7-3 edge in shots on goal and dominated the possession in the first frame, but Ellen Meyer made six saves to keep her team in the game.

Savage struck again just 32 seconds into the second half, stick-handling through the circle and getting Silverstein to commit on a fake shot. Despite having a pair of defenders at the goal line, the ball snuck through to give Dartmouth a 2-1 lead.

In the 44th minute, Liz Malone provided the equalizer after a scramble in front of the net on a quick counter attack. Danielle Cosentino had the ball from short range and made a short pass to Malone, who finished the play for her third goal of the season.

A tough break on a penalty corner gave the Big Green the lead back in the 49th minute. Off a penalty corner, Janine Leger’s shot deflected off a defender and Olivia Quaglia redirected it in to make it 3-2.

Savage completed the hat trick with a booming shot into the top corner after a quick rush into the offensive zone in the 56th minute. Just over a minute later, Dartmouth extended the margin to 5-2 off a penalty corner by Savage that Eliza Becker converted into a goal.

The Big Green tacked on another insurance goal, by Quaglia, with just under four minutes remaining to seal the win.

The Lions return home next Friday, Nov. 1 to take on Yale at 6 p.m.
