NEW YORK  - After nearly three decades at Columbia University, Kevin McCarthy ’85CC has resigned as Head Women’s Soccer Coach to pursue other opportunities, Dr. M. Dianne Murphy, Director, Intercollegiate Athletics and Physical Education at Columbia University, announced today.

"Kevin has been an integral part of Columbia men and women’s soccer for more than three decades, as a player, assistant men’s soccer coach and head women’s soccer coach,” said Murphy.  “Kevin has been a wonderful asset to Columbia Athletics.  We thank him for his loyal service to Columbia. He has my utmost respect and admiration.”

McCarthy was just the second women’s soccer coach in Columbia history.  He took over the reigns of the Columbia Women’s Soccer Program in 1994, after serving as an assistant coach for the men’s program. He won the school’s first Ivy League title in women’s soccer in 2006.  McCarthy leaves Columbia with a 163-142-39 overall record and a 41-80-19 Ivy League record. His teams garnered three top-three finishes in the Ivy League since 1994.

McCarthy recruited and coached numerous All-Ivy League student-athletes, including two Ivy League Players of the Years in Shannon Munoz ’07CC and Sophie Reiser ’10CC.  Three of his former players are in the Columbia Athletics Hall of Fame: Tosh Forde ’99CC, Ali Ahern ’00CC and Munoz.

Added Murphy, "I know Kevin will be successful in whatever avenue he chooses to pursue. We wish him nothing but the best as he moves on to another chapter of his career."

Columbia will begin a national search for a new head women's soccer coach immediately.
