NEW YORK – To kick-off the 2014 year, the Columbia men’s swimming and diving team will begin the second half of its season on Saturday, Jan. 4 as they hit the road to face Bucknell at 1 p.m. The Lions will look to stay unblemished in non-conference dual-meets this season in their matchup in Lewisburg, Pa. Dating back to the inaugural series meet in 2004-05, Columbia holds a 9-0 mark against the Bison.

LAST TIME OUT

To close out the 2013 year, Columbia capped a busy weekend at the Big Al Open on Sunday, Dec. 8, with a total of 470.5 points to finish fourth in the three-day meet. The Lions have compiled a 2-2 overall record this season, including an exciting conference win over Yale and an impressive showing over Army.

AN ARMY OF WINS

In the Lions’ latest non-conference meet, Columbia put together a 182.5-115.5 rout of Army behind a standout day in Uris Pool from the team’s young talent. Four Lion swimmers posted their first collegiate wins on Sunday, Nov. 17. Sophomore Ronald Chen picked up a victory in the 200 IM with a time of 1:55.33, along with first-years Drew May in the 100 butterfly (50.94), Jack Foster in the 500 free (4:39.11) and Thomas Norman in the 200 back (1:52.03).

JAKL ON THE MOVE

David Jakl has emerged as a leader in the pool for the Lions this season, tallying eight total wins including four individual events and four relay events. In both Ivy League meets against Penn and Yale, the Montery Park, Calif native dominated in the 100 fly capturing the victory in the event. In the matchup with Army, Jakl added an impressive performance in the 100 back, taking the event in a career-best time of 51:09.

SCOUTING THE BISON

Bucknell has jumped out to a 5-1 dual-meet record this season. The Bison came away three wins in a quad meet in early November and picked up its fourth straight victory at Colgate in December. In last season’s meet, Columbia came away with a dominating 209-91 win at Uris Pool.
