NEW YORK – This year’s Tyler Ugolyn MVP’s of Character Basketball Clinic proved once again to be a success.

With over 75 participants from the tri-state area, Columbia’s coaches and members of the men’s and women’s basketball teams spent the day with the youngsters and instructed them on the fundamentals of basketball.

With the Ugolyn family in attendance, head men's basketball coach Joe Jones welcomed the campers and shared with them the importance of the clinic and what it meant to exhibit an MVP character.

Special guest Rory Sparrow was also in attendance.  The former 12-year NBA veteran, and current NBA executive, opened camp with a motivational address and challenged the campers to use their opportunities to reach their goals in life.

Sparrow also shared several entertaining stories from his professional basketball career and concluded his time with the kids by engaging them in a question and answer session.

Toward the end of the clinic, several members of the men's and women's hoops teams joined the children in a number of basketball competitions.  These competitions were followed by a short thank you and farewell by Joe Jones.

At the end of the day, the children had fun and exhibited the type of character indicative of Tyler Ugolyn '01, a former Columbia men's basketball player who passed away on September 11, 2001.
