Columbia Athletics Celebrates 25 Years of Women's Sports

NEW YORK ? A year-long celebration of the Silver Anniversary of the Columbia-Barnard Athletic Consortium concluded today with a gala luncheon in Low Memorial Library on the Columbia campus, that paid tribute to the administrators, coaches and student-athletes who have brought distinction to Columbia Athletics.

Columbia's Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Physical Education, Dr. M. Dianne Murphy served as the Master of Ceremonies, and opened the event with her welcoming remarks. University President Lee C. Bollinger also welcomed the distinguished guests and honorees to Columbia's campus before the luncheon began.

The event featured a video of highlights during the past 25 years, along with the recognition of the 25 Most Influential Athletic Alumnae and an Honor Roll of the top female student-athletes of the last quarter century. Presenters included Marjorie Greenberg Tversky, Athletics Director Emerita of Barnard College, Merry Ormsby, a former Associate Athletics Director at Columbia University, Patricia E. Grieve, Columbia's Faculty Athletics Representative, and Cheryl Milstein, a Barnard College trustee.

The keynote speaker was Dr. Christine H.B. Grant, the Women's Athletics Director Emerita at the University of Iowa. Dr. Grant, who spoke about the power of athletics in the women's movement, served for 27 years as the Directory of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women at the University of Iowa, and is considered one of the foremost national experts on gender equity in sport.

Also honored at the luncheon was Dr. Donna A. Lopiano, who was given the inaugural Columbia Athletics Distinguished Leadership Award. Dr. Lopiano, who is the President and founder of Sports Management Resources, has been nationally and internationally recognized for her leadership advocating gender equity in sports. The former Chief Executive Office of the Women's Sports Foundation, she was named one of "The 10 Most Powerful Women in Sports" by Fox Sports, and listed as one of "The 100 Most Influential People in Sports," by The Sporting News.

The focus of the event, however, was the former Columbia and Barnard athletes who were being honored, and are listed below.
